I was born in New Orleans and grew up in Lakeview. My father was a restaurateur who owned several restaurants on the Westbank of the Mississippi, in Algiers and Gretna. I attended St. Dominic, St. Anthony and Gulf Coast Military Academy before attending and graduating from Holy Cross High School in the lower 9th ward of New Orleans. After a year at the University of Southwestern Louisiana at Lafayette, I joined the Air Force and subsequently served in the United States, Vietnam, Japan, Korea and Okinawa. My interest in photography started while serving in Vietnam in the late sixties. Armed with a Minolta SRT-101 and some basic photo equipment, I quickly realized that I really enjoyed the creativity and expression of the art form.
I photographed the usual things, such as scenery and the things that surrounded me, things that I would be able to look back on as memories. However, I found great pleasure in those one of a kind photos, which would not just bring back memories, but capture the essence of something that would pique the interest of a casual observer. I sought out to find the unusual things surround us, but we sometimes never see, or even realize they are there. Of course the war and the demands of my mission, limited my time behind the lens and in the darkroom.?
After the war, I found myself back in the States, raising a new family and running my exterminating business. There really seemed like there was no time for photography. Of course I was still the family photographer for parties and gatherings, and was always providing someone with copies of the pictures for their own albums.
After years in business, Steve retired in 2008. It only took about 6 months for me to realize that retirement was not ready for me. I returned to school and earned my Master's Degree in Public Administration and eventually took a position with the U.S. Army. Now, without the rigors of raising a family and business, I found some time for photography. Of course, my real passion is still my beautiful wife of 40 years, Charlene.
