Happy Children make for Happy Photos!

Happy Children make for Happy Photos!

On the day of your photo shoot, start getting ready early; try to do as much to prepare as early as you can so you are not running around at the last minute trying to curl everyone's hair and pack your necessities. And yes, I recommend packing a few bottles of water and a few snacks if you have little ones! You want to keep everyone happy while shooting. Amy: Tamron 18-270mm Di II VC PZD
Strike a Pose!

Strike a Pose!

Allow the subjects to choose their pose, this will allow them to feel more comfortable and relaxed, taking focus off the fact that they are being photographed. Lynda
Beating the Clock

Beating the Clock

Some of my best family shots have been taken with my self-timer. Something about the running back and forth to push the button puts everyone in the picture at ease. It must the fun of wondering whether or not I can make it back into the picture before the shutter goes off! This shot was roughly the 4th picture taken and the smiles got bigger and bigger the more pictures we took. My advice for group shots...have fun! Lynda
Get everyone on the same plane...

Get everyone on the same plane...

I like to get everyone on the same plane as this helps to keep everyone in focus. Stephanie: Tamron SP 17-50mm F/2.8 Di II VC
Make it fun

Make it fun

When getting a group together, especially one with children, get them to act silly for a couple of frames; it will help everyone loosen up. Stephanie: Tamron SP 17-50mm F/2.8 Di II VC
Get a Good Mix

Get a Good Mix

When doing a family photo shoot, keep changing the grouping of family members. That way you have a nice variety of pictures. Stephanie: Tamron SP 17-50mm F/2.8 Di II VC
Consistency

Consistency

When dressing your family for the pictures, it is always best to choose matching attire. This allows the focus to remain on the family as a whole and not one specific individual. Stephanie: Tamron SP 17-50mm F/2.8 Di II VC
Light Environment

Light Environment

Search for a location in the house with lots of light. I like to move my camera meter up a notch to over-expose a little. Stephanie: Tamron SP 17-50mm F/2.8 Di II VC
Capture the unexpected

Capture the unexpected

You never know what will happen when you take group shots. In this case, the dog jumped into the group posed in front of a large window, and just as I was taking the shot, she decided she had enough and tried to leave (hence the blurry dog!). But the fun of having the dog jump in made for some great natural reflections from my group. Stacie: Tamron 18-270mm Di II
Make Portraits Intimate

Make Portraits Intimate

Tell your subjects to get close to each other. Oftentimes this creates an intimacy in portraits - it keeps them from feeling staged or forced. Liz: Tamron SP 90mm F/2.8 Di
